The Perry Shrine Club meets the 4th Thursday of each month at a variety of restaurants, in their local area. We are fortunate to have a speaker at each meeting. The topics are varied and different members volunteer for finding a speaker. At Christmas we do a raffle, etc. to raise extra money for Erie Shriners Hospitals for Children. We also have an annual steak roast at a member’s home in August and it is such a relaxing time.
Perry Shrine Club also sponsors the mini-cars that are recognizable by everyone at parades. We are always looking for Shrine Masons interested in driving or working on the mini-cars. The leaders of the mini-cars are Bob Cox and Jerry Hussong. We parade many times during the summer, both at Potentate’s call outs and at parades that are arranged by our unit.
The mini cars were bought in 1986 at a cost of $1600 each. Each person owned their car and any expenses were the owner’s responsibility. Howard Wood, at this time, is the only one who still owns one of the original cars. Others have been passed on or sold to another member or have substitute drivers.
They originally started with 4 and eventually had 10 cars and built a trailer to haul them. The plans for the trailer were drawn up by Howard Wood and built by Ernie Olin. Don Martin had a truck to haul the trailer. The men wanted to take these cars to the fireman’s parades to have people learn more about the Shrine Masons. Eventually they became a Unit of Damascus and now have call out parades. Everyone one, young and old looks forward to seeing these cars at the parades.
